Day 1
In preparation for our camping trip, we enjoyed some informative and helpful lessons where we learned about camping and bear safety, as well as some exciting games that helped us practice storytelling and speaking. We packed up our bags and headed towards the mountains, anticipating our upcoming adventures in the wilderness. Once we arrived at Pocaterra, we admired our beautiful surroundings, then worked as a team to set up for the days ahead. Once we were settled in our tents beside the majestic riverfront, we cooked a delectable meal of chicken souvlaki, alongside various appetizers and healthy snacks. The owls surrounded the fire pit, where they kindled a fire and enjoyed the warmth of the blazing flames in the cool and peaceful night, before heading into their tents to sleep under the stars.

Day 2
After a delicious and filling breakfast, we set out on a biking journey through the mountains of Upper Kananaskis. Our friend Lindsey learned to ride a bicycle for the first time! We were so proud to see her success. The breathtaking views and the sounds of nature were so gorgeous to see and hear as we travelled through the forest. We biked up a steep hill and took a relaxing break at the top, where we found a glistening and blue glacial lake. We kicked back and enjoyed the natural beauty of the landscape. When we got back to the campground, we began to cook a delicious supper and enjoyed eating until we couldn’t eat any more! To finish the night, we sang songs and played guitar around the fire, as we cooked and shared marshmallows and s’mores. Yum!

Day 3
We got up bright and early, and after a fantastic breakfast of pancakes we went hiking up to Chester Lake! We had some excitement along the way. Some other hikers shared pictures of a grizzly with cubs that they had seen in a meadow close to where we were hiking. After climbing up to Chester Lake we enjoyed the beautiful views and some of us even went for a swim in the chilly glacial lake. We had an amazing lunch and then began our descent. We appreciated the majestic mountains, and the still quiet of the forest. When we got back to camp we played some volleyball and badminton, ate a nutritious supper and then had another spectacular night with our friends singing around the campfire!

Day 4
With an early morning start, the owls made their way to the ice fields and horseback riding. Some of the owls who went horseback riding explored the mountains and rode around the beautiful turquoise water of Lake Louise. It was amazing to connect with such magnificent animals, and to enjoy the exquisite nature around us. Afterwards, some of us went into the popular tourist attraction- the Lake Louise Fairmont Chateau to shop and buy refreshments! Although the ice fields’ tour was cancelled due to smoke, we made the most of our time spent together and explored the area to discover Peyto Lake and Waterfowl Lake! We had many laughs and fun moments while we took the spontaneous journey around the area. We reunited with our friends and took pictures in front of famous Lake Louise where two mountains that face each other! We admired the beauty of the glacial water. When we got back to our site, we ate a huge stir fry and after eating we were tuckered out from our busy day, so we got cozy in our tents and dozed off to the sounds of the river.

Day 5
Waking up to a great Mountain View never gets old when when we are camping! We had a fabulous breakfast of French toast with maple syrup. And then we all hopped on the bus to tour the famous town of Banff! This tourist town boasts some of the most amazing hot springs, great food, fantastic shopping, and let’s not forget the incredible views of the Rocky Mountains! After eating an amazing grilled hamburger with all the fixings some students decided to spend the day relaxing in the famous hot springs. We had a lot of fun, and everyone felt refreshed after soaking in the hot mineral springs. Then we came back to the campsite. We had an awesome pasta dinner and then tried out roasting marshmallows and making s’mores on the crackling campfire.

Day 6
We got to sleep in a bit on our wonderful relaxing day! We had a wonderful brunch of bacon and eggs and then the students prepared a a volleyball tournament for everyone. After a fierce competition and an intense round robin that included multiple games we had a group of students and teachers win the day. We also enjoyed playing guitar, ukulele, accordion and singing in between volleyball games. We also tried out some board games we then had a wonderful stir fry for supper. Then we had our last campfire, songs were sung, laughs were shared and good memories were made.

Day 7
We woke up to a frosty, chilly campsite and ate a quick and tasty breakfast. We worked together to load up the truck and bus so that we could make our way over to West Edmonton Mall- one of the largest malls in North America! We were amazed at how large the mall was, and that there is a swimming pool and an amusement park inside of it! We zipped and zoomed down the twisting and powerful water slides, jumped off of the diving board and ball and rope, and swam in the ginormous wave pool! What a blast! Some us wish we could’ve swam for longer, while others enjoyed the rest of their day shopping. Wow what an eventful day. We got back to Calgary and settled ino the Econolodge. Many of us were thrilled to sleep in a bed! YAY!

What an amazing 5 days! 🙂

On the first day, everyone was ecstatic about what the day will bring… Shopping!!! Right after a healthy breakfast and some amazing lessons about love, grammar games, and water madlibs! After we eagerly hopped on the bus and took off for Chinook Shopping Mall. The whole day was spent at mall, shopping, eating and watching movies.

After lunch, it was time for a relaxing afternoon at the movies. It was a hard choice between Jurassic park, Mama Mia, The Incredibles 2, Mission Impossible and Ant-Man. But we received great reviews from all the students. We finished off the day with a really Greak meal at OPA!

The next day was a day to remember for us here at Wynchemna history, only once before has any group here at SAIT achieved the feats that were achieved here today. Today was the 2nd ever Wynchemna’s Got Talent Show! The students spent most the day practicing and perfecting their performances and eating Burgers, Japanese and Korean cuisine.

Finally, stage was set, row upon row of seats lay facing the stage… the students in the audience sat filled with anticipation and awe as they stared at our enchanting host Lucas who lead the crowd through the Canadian anthem, O’Canada!

There was some seriously stupendous singing, some dangerously delightful dancing, some grandiosely great guitar playing and even some very original computerized art. The building shook with cheers of approval, bouts of laughter and cries of amazement. Even our most stern judges (teachers) couldn’t help but join in on the cheering some of us even shed some tears!

Overall the talent show was one of the best nights we’ve had so far and everyone was a star. At the end of the night we gave our heartfelt farewells to Sherry, Zeya, Yidi… tears were shed but only because of how much everyone appreciated their loving friendship.

WOW!! What a last day we had at Wynchemna today with the Marmots. We had our last breakfast today in our breakfast groups and of course we splurged on food with a massive feast….because, well, it was our last breakfast! After that, the Marmots brainstormed ideas for their newspaper articles and then proceeded to write rough drafts in the classrooms. The Marmots made top 10 Wynchemna moments, wrote about their favourite stories, interviews with other students and so much more. They then went to the SAIT computer lab to type up the articles and turn them into newspaper-style prints.

After the newspaper we finished the Marmots headed back to the residence and were such a help to the teachers as they cleaned their rooms and apartments. They then packed up their suitcases and then headed to the common room for the end of camp slideshow and the awards ceremony. Some tears were shed and many laughs were had during the slideshow which had pictures and videos from the beginning to end of the camp and everything in between. After the slideshow, the teachers handed out the awards, and each Marmot won a very specific and unique award.

After the awards were done, we piled on a bus for the last dinner together, which was great as usual. The Marmots were treated to yummy frosties after the dinner, courtesy of camp director Roland as a reward for being such well-behaved campers for the last three weeks.

The night ended with an awesome dance/karaoke party in the SAIT residence basement, where the Marmots showed off their awesome singing voices and dance moves. That marked the end of the night, as the Marmots have to get up oh so early tomorrow morning for their flight back to China.

That marks the end of another amazing, fun-filled camp and while it tears us teachers up to even think about it, all good things must come to an end. On behalf of San, Dylan Michelle, Ali, Mikaela and all the other junior teachers, we wish the Marmots all the best in life. They will be missed dearly by us Wynchema teachers.

The dreadful last day ):

We started the day by gathering in our breakfast rooms one last time. It was a fun-filled breakfast. After, it was time for one last sport, kayaking. As opposed to canoeing, we got our own boat this time. In the beautiful August weather we went for a paddle in the Glenbow Reservoir.

After lunch, it was time to celebrate the Canadian adventure of the last few weeks. First, we watched a slideshow created by the teachers which reviewed all the memorable moments of the camp, from the first day, lots of activities, down to today and everything in between. The students also had videos made for all the teachers of the camp and everyone shed a few (or many) tears.

Next we all headed to the grand hall of SAIT for the Wynchemna award ceremony. Everyone got the awards that defined them throughout the past three weeks. They enjoyed their awards and they enjoyed knowing what us teachers thought of them.

They went out for dinner at Denny’s after and enjoyed some frosties for dessert as a celebration of being such a great group. It still was not the end of the day and the students got to enjoy the evening at Karaoke Night with the rest of the students and teachers. They sang a variety of songs and danced along with each other. They all later went back to hang out with the rest of the group in their apartments and common areas to say goodbye to the many friends they have made in the past few weeks that will last them a lifetime.

Today was a great day for the foxes!! The students started off the day with a great breakfast and a lesson. It wasn’t just a regular lesson though…they got to write newspaper articles about this camp, what they enjoyed most and so much more. After this lesson, they got to go to the computer lab to type up their article in a document and make it look nice.
They got to eat lunch after the class and the computer lab and really enjoyed the variety there was for lunch today.

After lunch, they were in for a long bus ride to Horseshoe Canyon where they hiked around for an hour. They were so exhausted but there was fresh juicy watermelon waiting for them at the end of the hike so they can get refreshed. The next stop was the Royal Tyrrell Museum where the students learnt a whole bunch of things about dinosaurs! They went through the different times and also got to visit the planetarium.

After the visit to the museum, they had a picnic in Drumheller at a park where they enjoyed some hot dogs and hamburgers. They also enjoyed the sprinklers and pool. They took a final picture with a giant dinosaur and headed back to SAIT. They had a fun road trip back where the students sang, danced and napped. They were exhausted and went to bed right away in preparation for tomorrow being their last full day at Wynchemna!

Such an amazing day for the Cunning Arctic Foxes today! They started off the day with a great breakfast and two short English and French lessons. Little did they know….they had two more short lessons planned for the evening (which they enjoyed anyways). They later enjoyed a great and nutritious lunch and then they had to head on over quickly to the SAIT rink to play some hockey. They learnt about hockey, practiced some hockey essentials like passing and shooting and so much more!

After hockey, the students had another surprising activity planned. The teachers had promised them to take them ice skating since they hadn’t had the chance yet. Today, they finally got the chance to go ice skating on the Olympic Oval at the University of Calgary! They were so excited to find this out and had a great time skating. It was the first time skating for a few of them and they really enjoyed learning how to skate.

They headed back to SAIT after ice skating for the final two lessons of day and had to head back out to have supper at Swiss Chalet! They enjoyed a caesar salad, chicken and mashed potato with gravy meal. The vegetarians enjoyed a rice and vegetable stir fry.

The day wasn’t over yet for these Foxes though… They came back to SAIT for a Loose Moose workshop where they really enjoyed fun activities. The day was way too long for them so they made it to bed very fast and are fast asleep.

Today was a busy day for the Owls. They woke up a little bit earlier this morning to get their laundry done. Then, after the usual but always delicious breakfast of waffles, eggs, bacon, fruit, yogurt and bagels with cream cheese, they headed to their lessons. Although the lessons were very interesting, the students could barely sit still because they were so excited to try Canada’s national sport, hockey! After some drills and a game, the Owls’ stomachs were growling and they devoured lunch at Happy Hut. After lunch, they got into their tent groups and made T-shirts, songs and posters. After the students each took turns presenting their hard work, the stage was filled with clapping, singing and cheering! Even though our judges (teachers) were tough, the everyones hard work really paid off and we had an amazing show! After the competition was over, we had some pizza and snacks before heading off to bed. Another fun-filled day at Wynchemna lies ahead!

After a day of relaxation, swimming and shopping yesterday the marmots were ready for an adventure. They were back together in their respective breakfast groups and started the day once again with some nutritious and delicious breakfast. After some amazing lessons with amazing teachers the marmots had an amazing lunch! They had been very pumped for the great race all day and got started right away! During the race the marmots got to visit some of the most famous sites in Calgary, talked to friendly Calgarians, completed fun tasks like dancing with strangers, and taking pictures with a bear (No, not a real one, even though they tried looking). Marmots are happiest when they are eating yummy food and today they were exceptionally happy because they got to eat at one of Calgary’s best Chinese restaurants called U & me.

Today we had the long-awaited trip to West Edmonton Mall—the biggest mall in North America—for our foxes! Breakfast was quick, but nutritious and yummy as always! After breaky we hopped on the bus and the trek for West Edmonton began. While the foxes were tired, they made the best of the trip because they were so excited. Once they arrived, they were treated to an awesome, but quick, lunch before they got a chance to explore the mall.
The foxes had three options for the day: spending the whole day in the waterpark, spending the whole day shopping, or splitting the day in the waterpark and shopping in the mall. Half the foxes opted to split the day, while the other half decided to shop the whole day because the mall is so massive. The foxes who went to the waterpark had such a fun time that they almost didn’t leave! The wavepool was a great time, and the many different types of body and tube slides kept them busy the whole time. Free drinks and a hot tub for relaxing completed our time at the waterpark.
As fun as the waterpark was, exploring everything else the mall had to offer was just as fun. With over 800 stores and services including nine attractions, two hotels and over 100 dining venues in the complex, the mall offered so much to do for each and every fox. They explored candy, toy, clothing and shoes stores, watched the figure skating and even got a chance to see the seal show. The foxes had so much fun they could have spent an entire week exploring the West Ed Mall, but the day unfortunately had to come to end. We arrived back at SAIT at the end of the day and the foxes were so exhausted from all the shopping, exploring and waterpark fun that they had no problem falling asleep, anticipating the busy day to come tomorrow!
