Chuckling Bison - July 15 2015 - Paper Clippin
Another full day began with the second time in our new breakfast groups. We all chatted and fueled up before heading to our lessons. The students learned cooking vocabulary, interviewed each other, and participated in the Hot Air Balloon story activity in their classes while practicing English and getting to know each other better.
For lunch, we ate at one of the food courts on SAIT's campus. Lots of nutritious and delicious choices and the opportunity to enjoy some of the other buildings around our residence.
Our evening activity was the Paperclip Game, which was inspired by the story of Kyle MacDonald, who famously bartered his way from one red paperclip to his own house over the course of the year. The students explored a residential neighbourhood in Calgary to see if talking to people and trading up item by item really works. Since Canadians are reputed to be friendly, hospitable people, the activity actually works.
Our three groups ended up procuring an espresso machine and Columbia winter jacket; a Sony speaker with subwoofer and a painting; and a roller suitcase and some headphones. Not bad for spending only a couple hours in one neighbourhood! So many thanks to the residents that exchanged items with us!
Then we bought groceries at Safeway to make a home-cooked meal back at our apartments - which also involved some vocab the students learned earlier! We laughed, ate heartily, and befriended each other over supper, leaving everyone with a good sense of camaraderie.
Finally, we crowned Michal, from Prague, Student of the Day and headed to bed, tired but very satisfied with our day.
Until tomorrow!
