From Laundry to Land Acknowledgement: A Day of Camp Information
July 16 at Wynchemna was a day brimming with preparation and engaging lessons. The day began with the usual morning routine of breakfast, providing a nourishing start to a day full of activities. Following breakfast, we tackled the necessary but often overlooked task of laundry. This was a crucial step in getting ready for our upcoming camping trip, ensuring everyone would be well-prepared for the adventure ahead.
Our first lesson of the day set the tone for the educational journey we were on. After an engaging session, we headed to the café for lunch. The variety of options, including sandwiches, beef stroganoff, vegetables, salads, and poutine, catered to diverse tastes and provided a hearty meal to fuel us for the afternoon’s activities.
Post-lunch, we delved into our second and third lessons, which were both informative and culturally enriching. We started with a discussion about Indigenous people, focusing on the concept of sharing circles. This practice, rooted in Indigenous traditions, emphasizes respect, equality, and community. We learned that sharing circles are a way to give everyone a voice, fostering an environment of mutual respect and understanding. This lesson was particularly significant as it underscored the importance of acknowledging that we are on Indigenous land here in Canada. The recognition of this fact brought a deeper sense of appreciation and respect for the land and its original inhabitants.
Following this cultural immersion, we shifted gears to focus on camping safety. This lesson was vital as it prepared us for the week ahead, equipping us with the knowledge and skills needed to ensure a safe and enjoyable camping experience. Topics covered included setting up tents, fire safety, wildlife awareness, and the importance of leaving no trace to preserve the natural environment. These practical skills would soon be put to the test, making the lesson both relevant and engaging.
After the lessons, the focus turned to preparation for the camping trip. We cleaned our rooms, packed our backpacks and suitcases, ensuring that we had all the essentials for the adventure. The anticipation of the upcoming trip added a buzz of excitement to the air.
In the evening, we walked to North Hill Mall for a delicious supper at Boston Pizza. The meal, featuring Mariana pasta and garlic bread, was a delightful treat and a perfect way to end the day.
Returning to SAIT, we gathered to discuss our day and the exciting week ahead. The conversation was filled with enthusiasm as we shared our thoughts on the lessons learned and the anticipation of the camping trip. The day's activities had not only prepared us practically but also enriched us culturally and intellectually, setting the stage for a memorable week in the great outdoors.
